Overview
To begin this project, we were given a series of worksheets in order to prepare for a mini project. The first assignment we were given was the Pythagorean Theorem. This was the beginning of the mathematical content we were going to cover. From then, we learned the distance formula which led to many different assignments including right triangle trigonometry (Sine, Cosine, and Tangent). We spent a very long time covering volume and different problems surrounding that.
Design Your Own Project
Given the opportunity to design my own measurement project, my partner and I decided to find the volume of a pizza. This involved finding the volume of the crust, the area of cheese, and the entire pizza as a whole.
The Math
To find these calculations, my partner and I first looked at this problem as a cylinder. From there, we used the cylinder formula to find the final solution. We first found the calculations of the crust. The measurement we chose for one side of the crust was 1 inch. Secondly, we found the volume of across the pizza only (Without crust). The measurement we chose for that was 9 inches. Which made the overall length of the pizza 11 inches.
Final Measurements
Crust: 30.630
Pizza (Without Crust): 31.808
Entire Pizza: 62.438
Pizza (Without Crust): 31.808
Entire Pizza: 62.438
Reflection
This project overall was extremely difficult, but very rewarding. When it began, I was a bit uneasy about the work we were doing as I found it quite challenging. Especially when we began working on trigonometry. During the project we designed, I found it difficult to find the measurement of each piece as an individual. I personally believed that I didn't challenge myself enough during the course of this project. Other groups chose to measure more obscure and large scale things. Other than that, I found this project very interesting and freeing. I was able to gain the skills to design and find a solution to my own project. I learned many skills, one of those being staying confident, patient, and persistent. Despite feeling uncomfortable with the material at first, I was able to overcome this challenge and stay at pace with this project.
